Young Dalit girl raped and murdered with eyes removed in Faridabad

21-year-old Riya went missing on December 31, 2021, from her aunt’s house in Faridabad

Delhi: An incident of a heinous crime and rape against a Dalit woman has brought the country to shame again. Riya, a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) student from Faridabad was raped and murdered by a 54-year-old man in Jasana village, 16 km from Faridabad. The accused, Singhraj, allegedly did not only rape her but also removed her eyes and threw the body in the Agra canal.

The incident came to light when Riya did not reach her grandmother’s house in Faridabad on the evening of December 31, 2021. Riya went missing between her aunt and her grandmother’s house. After Riya did not come to her grandmother’s house, her family members went to the Faridabad police and registered a missing person’s report on January 1, 2022.

When police checked the call log details of Riya’s number, they found that the last few calls were made through Singhraj’s number. Singhraj lived near Riya’s grandmother’s house in Faridabad. When the police officials called him to the police station for further investigation, he ran away to some other place.

Singhraj could not hide from the police for a long time and finally, on January 5, he called Riya’s grandmother and told her that he had killed Riya and dumped her body near the Agra canal. After this, the family members went to the police station and told them about the call details. Following this, the police officials with some family members on the evening of January 6 went to find the body near the canal but could not find it. Late at night, the police officials went again to the canal and found the body. This time they went alone.

Riya’s uncle, Shiv Kumar alleges that why did the police went again to the canal by themselves. “We were not informed about the late-night checking to the canal. Why did they go by themselves? They only told us about finding the body the next day at 6 AM,” he said.

“When we went to the mortuary of BK Hospital, Faridabad, the police told us to take the body soon. They pressured us to take the body and said they will look into the investigation,” Kumar added. “The doctor told us that In the post mortem report, there were no signs of rape. But we did a re-medical test and the board of doctors told us that the report mentions that she was raped,” Kumar added.

The Faridabad police through their Twitter handle informed that they have arrested Singhraj.

“The accused has a criminal history and in the past, he has killed 3 minor girls, and 36 years back, he killed his uncle and brother. He used to molest minor girls and on making noise, he used to strangle them to death and throw their dead bodies in the Agra canal,” the Faridabad police said through the tweet.

According to NCRB data of the years 2019 and 2020, cases involving making physical contact, demand for sexual favors, showing pornography to women, and making sexually-colored remarks, Haryana was second in crime rate in the country in such cases. However, in 2019, it was the worst state on the crime rate of such cases with 916 FIRs.

The state recorded 1,373 rape FIRs in 2020, with close to four cases per day. Also, there were 452 incidents of repeated rapes. However, there was a dip of 7.2 percent from 2019 in rape FIRs. Crimes against women, in general, saw a steep rise of 86% in the last ten years between 2009 and 2019. Besides this, cases of rape increased by 50% during the same period.
